Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Therapy in Sheffield

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), magnetic magic that has caught the attention of people affected by long term depression. TMS was invented in Sheffield back in the 1980’s by Prof. Barker, a researcher at the University of Sheffield.

Since 2008, TMS has been giving hope to people in the States, and now its in our own city, where it was invented, Sheffield.

What is TMS Therapy?

TMS is a unique equipment and the technique involves placement of a small coil over the scalp; a rapidly alternating current is then passed through the coil wire, producing a magnetic field that passes through the brain. TMS is a completely non-invasive therapy that stimulates areas of the brain that are key to mood control. TMS does not cause therapeutic seizures whilst Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) does.

TMS therapy been approved by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence ‘NICE’ for the general treatment of clinical depression.

The advantages of TMS therapy compared to ECT and anti-depressant medications are: TMS has a lower cost compared to ECT, as well as having fewer side-effects (transient headache/dizziness) compared to both ECT and medication. There is no need of sedation (anaesthesia). TMS is highly effective, with a response of 60% and long lasting (up to 12 months).
